In 1896, Girton College in Cambridge, England, is the first in Britain to admit women. Tess Moffat and her fellow female first-years study ferociously and match their male peers grade for grade. But while the men graduate with their diplomas in hand, the women leave with nothing but the stigma of being a “blue stocking,” an unnatural, educated woman. The “Girton Girls” are determined to win the right to graduate. But little do they anticipate the cruelty of the class divide or the strength of the opposition. Blue Stockings is a moving, comical, and eye-opening story of four young women fighting for their education against the backdrop of women’s suffrage.
