Step 4: Prepare For Your MTP Audition
Please prepare the following for your MTP audition:
SONGS
Students should prepare two contrasting songs. One song should be a ballad (where the piece has longer, sustained vocal lines) and one song should be an uptempo (where the vocal line moves at a conversational pace) so as to contrast style.
-
-
- One song should be written before 1970. This song can be either the “uptempo” or the “ballad” (student’s choice).
- One song should be written after 1970 and contrast the style of the first.
- Length: Each song file should be 60-90 seconds (This time limit includes the slate at the beginning of the piece and is strictly adhered to.)
-
Students must sing to musical accompaniment, which could include live or prerecorded accompaniment. No “a cappella” singing (meaning singing without music).
-
-
- If you audition in person on the University of Utah campus, an accompanist will be provided.
- If you are auditioning in another location, please bring a backing track and a speaker.
- Please bring your book of audition material (monologues and songs), as we may ask to hear other options.
-
MONOLOGUES
Please prepare one contemporary monologue (typically written after 1950), 60-90 seconds in length.
-
-
- Monologues must be from a published play.
- Monologues cannot be from musicals.
- Your monologue should be 60-90 seconds (this time limit includes the slate at the beginning of the piece and is strictly adhered to.)
-
Step 4a: Submit Dance Audition Video
Please submit a dance audition video at least 48 hours before your scheduled audition.
Your dance audition video should feature you performing 30-60 seconds of dance in whatever discipline you feel most confident. This may include, but is not limited to jazz, ballet, tap, modern, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, or dance styles beyond American and Euro-western styles.
-
-
- Please do not submit “barre work.”
- Please use steps, movement, and physical vocabulary that you are familiar with and can execute well. To the best of your ability, move your body fully.
- Please include at least one turn, one jump and one kick (or other suitable rotation, elevation, and extension that works for your body).
- Dance media can be “self-choreographed,” but it must be a solo video of you. This can include a show, competition, or other performance so long as you are clearly featured on your own.
-
If you do not have a dance video you wish to use, we have provided a set of written instructions, an accompaniment file, and four videos to help you learn a short dance sequence. Follow the link below, read the instructions carefully, then use the videos to learn and perform the steps based on your experience level.
Your dance video must be submitted at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled audition.
I'm Ready To Submit My Video I Will Be Using Your Dance Sequence
Once your video is ready, you can either post it to YouTube as an “Unlisted” video, or upload it directly using our submission form. Please note that both options require a Google account. Don’t wait until the last minute—make sure you allow yourself enough time to submit your video and confirm that it was uploaded successfully.
