Associate Professor Lecturer
Hugh Hanson holds a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Directing and a Master of Arts in Speech Pathology, both from the University of Utah. He specializes in voice production as well as a variety of speech disorders. He is a member of the American Speech and Hearing Association and the Voice and Singing Teachers Association. He is also fluent in Spanish. Hugh teaches courses in acting, directing, voice and speech, and the online course Dramatic Arts in Television. Hugh is the Artistic Director of Salt Lake Shakespeare, the Department of Theatre’s resident summer performance company.
Over the past five years he has directed works including Two Gentlemen of Verona, Henry IV Part I, The Taming of the Shrew, Macbeth, Twelfth Night for the company. Additional directing credits include Alcestis and Elektra for the Classical Greek Theatre Festival at Red Butte Garden; All My Sons and The Tempest in the Babcock Theatre; Snapshot, Bus Stop, The Pillowman, Top Girls and Hurlyburly in Studio 115. Hugh also regularly directs productions at Kingsbury Hall for the Youth Theatre at the U program. Recent directing credits with YTU include Diary of a Worm Spider and Fly, The Boxcar Children, and James and the Giant Peach. Hugh has also directed works for Utah Lyric Opera and Utah Opera Company.
