We see the making of theatre as much an art as the final product it produces. It’s the spectacular magic made when artists of different disciplines from production to stage management to dramaturgy and acting weave their visions into one tapestry made to envelope an audience.
Studying with us at the U’s Department of Theatre feels like joining a vibrant, supportive community. Mentorship, support, and access to those who can launch you into the future you envision.
Becoming part of our community happens early and in a multitude of ways. We can’t wait to welcome you as a new member of our family.
Welcome to the Department of Theatre: Your Family in the Arts
In the Department of Theatre, you’re not just a student—you’re part of a family. From the moment you arrive, you’ll find a supportive, dynamic community that values creativity, collaboration, and connection. Our department’s programs go beyond the classroom to ensure every student feels welcomed, integrated, and prepared for success, both within our theatre family and the broader College of Fine Arts (CFA).
Key Programs for Connection and Engagement
1. Coffee with the Chair
Enjoy open, informal conversations with the Department Chair. These sessions allow students, staff, and faculty to share ideas, ask questions, or simply connect through meaningful dialogue.
2. Town Hall
Our annual Town Hall event introduces students to faculty, staff, and resources across the department. Highlights include a fun scavenger hunt, informational booths, and opportunities to win prizes. It’s both a celebration and an informative kickoff to the year.
3. Department Welcome Back Party
This event marks the start of the year with food, fun, and connection. It’s a chance to meet new classmates, reconnect with returning students, and build relationships in a relaxed, celebratory setting.
Performance Labs: Learning in Action
Our labs offer first-year students valuable opportunities to observe, learn, and grow within their disciplines:
- Stage Management Labs– Explore essential techniques like conflict resolution, emergency procedures, and cutting-edge tools.
- PADP Labs– Dive into design strategies, collaboration methods, and critique processes.
- ATP & MTP Labs– Performance-based labs that introduce acting, singing, and dancing students to observational learning, constructive feedback, and regular opportunities to showcase their work.
Building Community Beyond the Classroom
Performance Attendance Events
Our department hosts special pre- and post-show gatherings where students, cast, crew, and faculty celebrate productions together. These events foster reflection, celebration, and shared success.
Student Mentorship with UROP
First-year students can connect with faculty mentors through the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP). This initiative offers hands-on experience and funding to support student-led creative projects and faculty collaborations.
Arts Pass and College of Fine Arts Assembly
Through U's Arts Pass, students can access free or discounted tickets to world-class performances on campus. Additionally, the College Assembly builds connections across all arts disciplines, creating an extended family of artists and innovators.
