Assistant Professor  •  Head of Theatre Studies

Alexandra Harbold is Assistant Professor of Directing and Head of Theatre Studies for the Department of Theatre, as well as Co-Founder and Co-Artistic Director of Flying Bobcat Theatrical Laboratory. She works as a freelance director, Equity actor, voiceover artist, and dramaturg.

Recent credits include directing the world premieres of Ronald and Edith (The Fairy Story Society & Flying Bobcat at the Great Salt Lake Fringe 2021), At the Bottom (Pinnacle Acting Company), The Night Witches (Egyptian YouTheatre at the Great Salt Lake Fringe 2019); the Utah premieres of Death of a Driver and The Wolves (Salt Lake Acting Company); co-creating The Live Creature & Ethereal Things (Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company in collaboration with Flying Bobcat Theatrical Laboratory, inspired by the Red Fred Project); and dramaturging Mary Stuart, The Lifespan of a Fact, Sweat and Oslo (Pioneer Theatre Company).

Harbold earned her Master’s in Performance Studies from the University of London, Goldsmiths College, and her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre (High Honors, magna cum laude) from Middlebury College. She is an alumna of SITI Company's Skidmore Summer Intensive, BADA's Midsummer at Oxford, Michael Howard Studios in NYC, Plan-B Theatre/Meat & Potato Theatre’s Directors’ Lab, and The Field (SLC). She is a proud member of Actor’s Equity Association (AEA) and associate member of Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC).&

Prior to teaching with the Department, she was honored to work as a guest director. Her productions with the Department of Theatre include The Night Witches; The Odyssey, The Rivals; You Never Can Tell; Self Defense, or death of some salesmen; The Owl GirlLove Alone; and The Eccentrics.

Current projects include directing Storm Still (University of Utah Babcock Theatre) and co-directing Liminal with Robert Scott Smith (University of Utah Studio 115), a New Work Project with Film Directors Sonia and Miriam Albert-Sobrino, Playwright Brandan Ngo and the Company. Liminal is a co-production of Flying Bobcat Theatrical Laboratory and the University of Utah Department of Theatre.
