THEA 2420 INTRO TO PLAYWRITING with Nick Dunn TuTh/12:25PM-01:45PM (only 8 spots available)
This course introduces students to the craft of playwriting. Through completing a series of reading, writing, and presentation assignments, students will learn the basics of writing for the stage. By the end of the course, students will have completed the first draft of a one-act or portion of a longer play.
THEA 3792 QUEER THEATRE with Lynn Deboeck Online, fulfills DV requirement
Queer Theatre asks students to contemplate the relationship between American drama written by LGBTQ+ playwrights and the ever-evolving U.S. culture these plays reflect.
FOR NON-MAJORS THEA 1013 EXPLORING THEATRE with Jane England Online
For Non-majors. Students will explore the art of theatre through lecture and participation. Students learn about theatre's craft areas-acting, playwriting, designing, directing; its production areas; its management areas; its history and aesthetics; its search for truth and its construction of meaning, and contributions to civilization (advocacy). Attend live theatre: Analyze and review live theatre experiences in writing.
THEA 1033-004 ACTING I FOR NON MAJORS with Margo Andrews TuTh/02:00PM-03:20PM (only 6 spots available)
For Non-majors. Acting techniques for non-majors. Students learn basic acting skills through class participation in monologue work, scene work, and improvisations.
THEA 1040 DRAMATIC ARTS/TELEVISION with Hugh Hanson Online
For Non-majors. Students will explore television as a theatrical art form. Television content and structure will be examined and critiqued through multiple lenses, including historical antecedents and international media issues. This is an online course.
THEA 3500 Sound Design with Jen Jackson
Sound Design explores the process of sound designing a show: from how to research sound or music to how to edit and create sound effects and music. The course also offers an introduction to sound technology for anyone who has ever been confused or frustrated by sound issues in the past! All majors welcome to sign up!
THEA 3400 Audio Tech for the Arts with Jen Jackson
Audio Tech for the Arts dives deeply into sound technology, with introductions and further explorations into areas such as wireless microphones, physics and psychoacoustics exploring the wild world of sound and how humans process it, recording techniques, home studio setup, sound system troubleshooting, and digital sound consoles - with hands on time with our three brand new and state of the art sound consoles in Meldrum, Babcock, AND Studio 115 theatres. All majors welcome, all questions encouraged, and the class is structured so that students with some or even no previous knowledge can learn.
THEAT 1050 - Introduction to the Visual Arts of Theatre with Michael Horejsi
Non-majors. Students will discover and explore the visual world of theatre, including the design process. Students will investigate elements and principles of design, and learn to apply them in the analysis of costume, scenery, and lighting.
THEA 2000: Production Design for Film & TV with Carolyn Leone
Prerequisite: THEA 1050/1550 or Instructor's Approval
Production design for Film and TV is a survey course for majors and non-majors who are interested in learning about the design and production of scenery, costumes and lighting for film and television productions. The course reviews the history of American film design and current trends in film/TV production design techniques. Film and documentary viewing is included with weekly lectures.
2nd Year Acting in the ATP (THEA 2220 T TH 10:45 – 1:45) with Robert Scott Smith
This course includes continued exploration of physical release and grounding of breath and body, listening, spontaneous interaction, inner monologue, and wants/actions/obstacles. Work is practiced through acting exercises and improvisation and scene study. Open to any students who have successfully completed a previous acting course in the Department of Theatre!
2nd Year Movement in the ATP (THEA 2240 M W 12:55 – 2:50) with Raheim White
This course is a continuation of the exploration of the fundamentals of movement and their relationship to acting through the work of Etienne DeCroux (corporeal mime), ballet for the actor, and modern dance techniques. Open to all Department of Theatre students!
2nd Year Voice and Speech in the ATP (THEA 2060 M W 10:45 – 12:40) with Margo Andrews
Students explore both expressive and technical voice work through movement-based modalities, open-ended explorations, and structured vocal progressions. Emphasis is placed on students becoming reflective practitioners who are aware of and take active ownership over their physical instrument in relation to effective vocal expression and the demands of theatrical storytelling. Open to all Department of Theatre students!
THEA 3262 – Costume Crafts with Wilson Liebering (M W 3:00 – 4:20)
This is a beginning crafts class exploring some fundamentals of costume crafts. The specific crafts to be studied will change each semester the course is offered, providing students with the opportunity to develop skills in a variety of techniques and tools used by the costume craftsperson. Crafts may include dyeing, jewelry making, millinery, and body-altering padding. This course is repeatable for credit. This semester the class with focus on puppet making!!!
